What Started it All…

These letters will find their way to you for many reasons. Maybe I need to give you a quick business update, or other important information. Primarily, I’ll send these letters to introduce my next writing piece or the concept explored that week, etc. So it might be a while in between these specifically, but there will be so much to share in the meantime.

I mentioned in my first letter that the name of this blog was inspired by a small, fictional writing piece of mine. “A Series of Observations,” was created either in my microeconomics class, or sitting in my car at lunch, who knows. Who cared about the state of the economy when I could live in a different world of my own creation? I was 18, taking my first official creative writing course at the community college I attended at the time. My professor was wonderful, my friends supportive (I’m talking to you Megan and Matt) and since then I have had the pleasure of creating so much with them. We had no prompts, and more importantly, no excuses. Quite literally anything was acceptable in this class, which became our greatest fear, and ultimately our greatest tool.

“A Series of Observations” might not have been the first thing I ever wrote, but it’s the first thing I wrote that made me feel like I could write more. What once was a unique writing style for me, has now become my staple and I use it throughout much of my work. Written in the third person, I aim to create as general a scene and character as possible. With little to describe their person beyond gender, it is my hope that readers can add their own flare to the story while reading. To interchange looks and preferences to in some ways create their own story, with their own conclusions. Many of my stories end at what most would assume a beginning, and I think that can be part of the fun of it…for short stories anyways. Assume what you will, take the characters where you like. I set the scene, provide the framework and invite your imagination to take over.

I absolutely (do not) hate to build a little suspense…but you’ll be able to enjoy “A Series of Observations: The Original Work,” tomorrow!
