Rooftop Nights

Her hands smoothed the silk of her dress over her hips. Admiring herself in the mirror, she realized how long it had actually been since she felt this beautiful, the kind of happiness that warms your body and you sense the buzz of energy coursing through you. Her long brunette hair was fashioned to cascade down her back and grazed her shoulders lightly. The night air mixed with the scent of her perfume and carried it along, sweetening the atmosphere as she entered the town car.

Gripping her small clutch, she reminded herself that she was prepared for anything, and that the night could be nothing but a success. Her phone dinged with messages from her boss, clarifying specifics for the evening and ensuring she would arrive promptly. The driver made small conversation with her, easing her mind and wishing her luck as she stepped out into the evening.

On the roof of the building, caterers stormed about, and people were bustling to and froe, the rising hum of voices filling the space, with music to accompany them. Upon glance, the night could not have been more perfect, the lights glittered against the dark skies, and every face carried a smile. Walking amongst the crowd, she waved and smiled to many. Her night was in fact a success, and as she talked with investors and donors, she knew their efforts would be plentiful beyond their initial thoughts.

She sipped champagne and discussed the events of the world with others, happy to have such great company around her. She relished in her own energies, feeling abundantly confident and letting that feeling radiate off of her. She excused herself from one conversation to enter into others and as she continued to walk throughout the party, she stopped herself from going further. The edge of the roof fashioned glass railings, so that the view seemingly went on forever and nothing could stop you from going with it. Disrupting the image was a man, and even from behind she had no doubt who it was. The sight made her heart throb and stop simultaneously, how long had it been now?

Her feet willed her to walk before her mind did, and he met her halfway to find themselves in the middle of dancing couples. Their eyes said all their mouths could not, for they knew there weren’t words that could do justice to how they felt. Instead, they smiled softly to each other. He reached for her hand and asked her to dance. The world faded away as they held each other and welcomed the possibilities of the evening.
