The circular room glowed from the days dimming light. Her fingers graced along the black and white keys before her as an otherwise ethereal song sang sadly, echoing along the corridors behind her.
Admittedly, she was attempting to distract herself, her mind occupied by someone that felt an entire world away from her.
Her phone wrang earlier that morning. She breathed in his voice and cherished its tone, complimented by the crashing sound of ocean waves around her. If home could ever be a feeling, this was it.
“I can’t have you halfway anymore.” said she, “I want you only. I want you when you’re a five minute car ride, a three hour bus ride, or even an ocean away. Simply, wholly and passionately you. You’ve made it clear you can’t reciprocate that, and to save myself, I have to let you go, even if it crushes me.”
His voice faltered on the line, he couldn’t find the right thing to say, and in his silence, she wished him well. Forcing the phone down took every part of her, her soul feeling defeated, her body weighed by her sudden grief. Her exhale released all her expectations, however undefined, and she sat with herself for a while, perhaps it was the rest of the day.
The ocean did not take her sorrow as she hoped, the earth did not take her whole as she wished. She was left intact but crumbling slowly. Staring at the horizon, she still longed for him, and imagined their time together that would not be.
The evening stars began to wake as she continued her sad melody, heartbreak sitting beside her like an old friend, arms wrapped tightly around her but remained quiet. Moving on was the only way forward, she knew this, but never imagined a moment would be without him. She closed the piano’s keys signifying her finale and rose to leave. She aimed to adjust herself in the mirror, but the reflection that greeted her was not her own.
Whatever breath she had was stolen from her and she feared turning around would cause this image to disappear.
He gazed back at her with equal intensity and spoke, so she knew this was real. “There’s only you.” said he. This forced her to turn, life rushing back into her as she raced into his arms.
No more words were needed, as there were no words that could more sharply define the way they felt as the kiss they shared did. For once, forever held much more certainty for them.
