I’ve been seeing a trend around social media where women dictate a small scene between them and their younger self. I thought this was a really beautiful trend and I wanted to give my own take on it! I do not know where the first post originated, but I hope you enjoy!
I met my younger self for coffee, we were both on time, had driven there in our Volkswagen Bugs, hers white; mine, dark silver.
Her clothes reflected her youth, with tighter silhouettes and unusual combinations, I wore an outfit for comfort and style. She sat nervously but I was calm.
I ordered a chai latte with oat-milk, she ordered the same made with regular milk and we smiled at the few things about us that are still the same.
Her long hair was left down and curled, my short hair sleek and straight. We talked about her plans for school, and I remembered all the decisions that I made differently.
I told her how we travelled the world when we graduated, how we have loved and lost, but have become stronger and more authentic than we ever thought we could be.
She asked me how we got over the first heartbreak we shared, I told her we didn’t. It simply got easier to live with, and much more importantly, we learned from it.
I asked her what she thought of our new life. She looked at me and smiled.
“I am so very proud of us.” She said.
What a high compliment it was, to know I had made her proud. How she felt safe knowing I still took care of her.
When the whole time, she was taking care of me.
