To Say Hello Again

There might come a day, an indeterminate amount from now, where the phone rings and it’s them on the other side.

It sends your mind spinning and turns your world upside down for entirely different reasons than the last time you spoke. There is too much to say at once.

You wonder how to say hello again, so long after goodbye. You try but find how hard it is to say each syllable, when that simple word could mean everything or a painful amount of nothing.

A year is a long time to withstand the growing weight of silence, but how different everything is because of it. Yet the season is the same as before, with warm summer days that hold the promise of adventure and freedom. Perhaps there is more that has not changed so much.

You force yourself to do it, and those two syllables pass your lips without difficulty, calmly even, and in the span of a few rings, you have said hello again.
